Date of flight:29th June 2011
Wing type:Paraglider
Flight details:
Arrived back at the Dyke to find most people packing up, and the weather perfect for XC. Why's noone flying? I ask, and get told it's too windy. Well, it's actually about 10-15mph, so I take off, and go straight over the back. Lovely. This time the climb is very slow, and takes me too far to the south. I arrive of the A27 about 1800 above take off, and decide to head east, thinking that essentially, I'd blown it. Got a zero over the town, and hung on in, and after several minutes, it got became a 1, 2, then 3 up. Deciding that I would meet the sea breeze front itself if I carried on, I opt for a glide east, and get into gentle lift all the way - no need to turn. All of a sudden, the wing drops back further than I've seen it do before, and I'm in very strong lift, with sea-breeze tendrils just below me. I race inland, now with bar on, and the vario goes ballistic. A glance down, and I can see 11.8 up on the averager. Yikes! Never seen this sort of lift in the UK before. It doesn't stop, and I don't need to turn between the A23 and Mount Caburn. But the sea breeze is winning. I'm trying to crab eastwards while pushing north on bar, but I keep seeing sea breeze convergence wisps in front of me. I eventually end up in the sea air, and sink out behind the Middle Farm Shop, in really rough air. I think about climbing out, but can't decide if this is lift, or just rotor. In the end, fear wins :0) Thanks to John B for the retrieve.
