Flight details: | I am away for a week flying under Gerolf Heinrichs' guidance in Greifenburg, Austria. I decided to come down a few days early and to stop on my way here at a couple sites further North. The first candidate was Kossen, both because geographically it was the first "popular" site on my way and because I met a local pilot in Spain a few weeks ago. Unfortunately he is still in Spain so I had to find my way around on my own. That wasn't too difficult, following the guide in the "Best flying sites of the Alps" book. My first stop was at the flying-themed bar at the bottom where the staff is very friendly and I got all the necessary local knowledge. This is where I got the first hint to my title: beautiful nice green fields, very much unlike the arid lunar-like fields I've seen a couple weeks ago in Northern Spain, gorgeous girls (for PC reasons I will not compare this to Spain, but you get the gist) and a lot of paragliders. I had a few cups of tea waiting for the day to develop, whilst apprehensively watching the ever growing number of PGs doing top to bottoms throughout the morning.
Eventually I moved on to the cable car, where they made no fuss about loading the HG. I must have had that foreign look as in the queue I have been approached by a few PG pilots to give more tips about the site. I was surprised to learn that the main point was "look out for the paraglier pilots, they are dangerous". I did mean to point out the paragliders they were carrying on their backs, but I decided to keep quiet - maybe they just had a very big packed lunch.
I shared the gondola with a girl named Sarah (see the title again: girls - pretty ;) She pointed out again that there are many "Sunday pilots" on the hill and they don't look around. She also said that I shouldn't worry too much about the site, because while some of the pilots found it difficult, most of them are in their 50s, and in her words "if they can do it". I did mean to say that my hero is about that old and yet he flies l |
