| Flight details: | What an incentive to go XC! As soon as I arrived at The Dyke on Sunday - slightly fuzzy headed after the excellent Summer Bash - I groaned, and decided that unless I wanted to spend the day slaloming around 90 other fuzzy headed pilots I'd better do something about it. Luckily the conditions were on my side, and after a few hair-raising minutes looking for a decent climb I managed to follow 16 other pilots into a thermal above the bowl. Patience paid off and after a few very attentive minutes I topped out and made a bid for freedom. It wasn't long before the sky cleared, the sun started doing it's thing, and I found myself cloud hopping, with Pete to my South and Hugh on the tandem somewhere between us. Hugh landed somewhere near Brighton, whilst Pete and I trundled along taking Falmer and Kingston, where we bemoaned the fact that we couldn't quite get into the thermal we were both flirting with. I then followed Pete as he headed towards the end of Gribbles Ridge and showed me the climb that kept me in the air (for the moment at least). I waved at the school as the next thermal drifted towards Bo Peep. From here another climb to Polegate, until eventually my luck ran out and I was down. Not too unlucky though as I was only a 15 minute walk from Pevensy and Westham station. I'd missed my (hourly) train by 5 mins, but who cared? There was a pub nearby with a garden and a nice dog and I spent a happy 45 mins lizarding, fuzzy head gone. |
