Flight details: | Day 1 of the BCC final. Merthyr Common. The wind was very mixed going from howling to just under top end. Pilots were getting away in the various lulls in the cycles. Roger and Dickon got away in one of those cycles. I was a bit slow and didin't and then had to wait for a while. After a few more howling moments found a lull and got away.
Connected with a thermal and went to base. And then started the ridge hopping. I was also pushing cross wind in the hope of missing the Severn and eventually going further. In hind sight I should have been less ambitious and just gone for the downwind run.
Got one more climb to base, hopped a couple more ridges with no lift then found one in the sun, with nice dark bits that should have been heating up and releasing.. I guess the funeral procession I could see in the valley below should have been a sign I was in the wrong place. Eventually managed to climb back up to nearly the same height I was when I first got to the ridge so went for the next one.
Didn't make it. Landed and enjoyed the pleasures of local buses back to Abergaveny. |
