Pilot Lectures part 3 - Flight Theory and instruments

OK you budding Pilots. The third part of the exam syllabus will be covered at the end of January.
See the list of topics at the end of this post to see what will be covered.

Please note the following from the Pilot Exam notes:
"For that reason candidates should have completed all of the PILOT
flying tasks before attempting the PILOT examination. They MUST have completed all the PILOT flying
tasks before the invigilator returns the exam and the Pilot Rating Application to the BHPA Office."

So before I do the final request for exams in January bring your pilot log books along so I can check you are done or go over what you need to do to get done.

If you have not completed all the tasks yet still come to the lectures. Then as you do finish the tasks during the year the exams can be arranged for you.

Flight theory and instruments
You should:
• be able to explain in detail how a wing creates lift, including the relevance of venturi tubes and Bernoulli's
theorem
• be able to define and use terms such as chord line, angle of attack, aspect ratio, centre of pressure,
washout
• be able to describe the aerodynamics of the stall
• be able to simply describe factors affecting stability in pitch, roll and yaw
• understand the relationship between glide ratio and l/d ratio
• understand the effect of ballast
• be able to name the forces on a glider in steady flight and explain their relationship
• be able to name the various types of drag and explain their causes
• be able to describe the relationship between the induced, parasitic and total drag and airspeed using
drag curves
• understand and be able to use a polar curve
• understand the basic working principles of altimeters and variometers
• understand terms such as total energy and airmass in connection with variometers

RRC 13 December

This saturday is looking possible. Wind in the right direction for the Dyke or Firle. I will be at the Dyke. At this point in the week it is looking borderline top end.

SO I will update friday night as if it increases a bit it will be blown out.

If it is on I will be available from 8.30 till 9.30 . After that I will be flying. Whenever I land to warm up feel free to chat.

During that first hour we will do ground handling and any other briefings needed for the day.

Pilot lectures part 2 - Meteorology

8 till 10 Pilot lecture 2 - Meteorology

There was a good turnout for the last one despite messing about with a last minute change of venue.

If you missed the first one dont panic I will uploading all the notes to the knowledge base.

So do come along to the second one.

If you have not met all the flying requirements yet, still come along. We can get you through the exam and as soon as you meet the requirements send off the exam to the BHPA

Lecture 3 will be in January and the exam in February - getting you all ready for the XC season.

Bring your BHPA number along with you for the November meeting and I will organise getting the exam papers ordered.

October induction and coaching evening - Start of Pilot Exam Sessions

This months coaching evening is October 30th at the Glynde Social Club.
7.30 to 8 pm is introduction for new members.

This is then followed by a talk.

This months will be the start of the Pilot Exam sessions.

coaching evening - the mysteries of the RASP skew T revealed

Gary Taylor is taking this months coaching evening.

He will be covering the skew -t weather diagrams and how to use and read them.

This is a great opportunity to understand how those graphs work, how to read them and how to use them in your flying.

(if you are scratching your head and asking what is a skew-t diagram then you definitely need to come along)

7.30 till 8 will be induction for new club members and then Gary will take over at 8 pm.

So come along and get some valuable information to help you plan your flying days.

Coaching Evening - The Southern Foot and Fly Challenge - All your questions answered.

This is the June Coaching evening. 7.30 till 8pm will be induction for new members. Come along and find out about the Club and get your initial introduction.

The venue is the Glynde Social club

This will be followed by the Foot and Fly Challenge launch.

This is a challenge to link up the Southern sites by flying and Hiking.

We will go over exactly what it is and how it works, what the rules are, what the prizes are and tips on how to finish it.

It is open to all Club Pilots and Pilots who are Southern Club members and BHPA members.

For the new CP it is a great way to start out on your first XCs and get to discover and fly all of the Southern Sites.

For the more seasoned Pilot it is a challenge to see who can fly the whole course.

So come along for a fun evening and get all your questions answered.

In a classic case of Stockholm Syndrome, Phil has announced that he will be heading off to see the sheep again over the bank holiday weekend.

So, any Red Ribboners who have not followed suit (and I wholeheartedly I recommend you to do so!) can meet at Airworks at 09:10 each day for a weather brief and so on if it proves actually flyable...

Coaching evening - An introduction to thermals and thermaling

It has been a while but Coaching evening are now going back in.

The evening will be at the Glynde Social Club

The format is that 7.30 till 8pm is induction for new members. So come along and get an introduction to the club and find out what being in the Club is all about.

8 till 10 is the Coaching talk. This one is geared for new/low air time pilots. But more experienced pilots more than welcome.

It will go over the basics of thermals, how they are formed, how they work and how we use them.

This will give you a good introduction to one of the key tools you will need for getting up, getting high and getting away.

Please Note the date. Traditionally coaching evenings are the last Thursday of the month. This is the week before that.

So come along, find out about thermals and meet your fellow pilots and have an enjoyable evening.
