Coaching evening for newer pilots

Event type:

7.30 to 8 will be induction for new members and this will be followed at 8 pm with the coaching evening.

Mainly for newer pilots ( or anyone who wants to turn up - but geared for lower air time). Essentially its an open question evening so you can ask what you like about paragliding and I will do my best to come up with some sensible answers. Anything in particular you want covered let me know. But I will be going over these areas:

Thermalling for beginners.
Getting ready for spring after the winter break
Choosing your site - RASP, weather etc.
Coaching and how to improve your flying skills.
Getting away from the hill/first XCs

For any coaches who can make it would be great if you can come along as well.

It will be at the Glynde Social Club.

Also, anyone wanting to take their pilot exam that night let me know

XC tips from a beginning XC pilot.

Induction for new pilots form 7.30 to 8pm ;

Ked Shayer is a pilot with around four years flying experience who managed a few good xc flights last year. He'll give a talk on xc tips from the beginner xc pilot's perspective, trying to highlight a few things that he's learned about flying xc in the UK. The talk is primarily aimed at pilots looking to get into xc or turn 10 km flights into 50 km flights, but Ked would be keen to have some more experienced pilots attend to add their views

theorem
• be able to define and use terms such as chord line, angle of attack, aspect ratio, centre of pressure,
washout
• be able to describe the aerodynamics of the stall
• be able to simply describe factors affecting stability in pitch, roll and yaw
• understand the relationship between glide ratio and l/d ratio
• understand the effect of ballast
• be able to name the forces on a glider in steady flight and explain their relationship
• be able to name the various types of drag and explain their causes
• be able to describe the relationship between the induced, parasitic and total drag and airspeed using
drag curves
• understand and be able to use a polar curve
• understand the basic working principles of altimeters and variometers

• understand, and be able to define and use, meteorological terms such as stability, instability, veer, back,
ELR, DALR, SALR, tephigram, anabatic, katabatic
