Free flying carries risk
Paragliding and hang gliding are adventurous activities that carry a risk of serious injury or death. You take part entirely at your own risk. Nothing on this website removes your personal responsibility for your own safety and the decisions you make in the air and on the hill.
The Southern Hang Gliding Club, its committee, coaches and volunteers provide this site and its information in good faith to support members’ flying. To the fullest extent permitted by law, they accept no liability for any loss, injury or damage arising from your use of the information here or from your decision to fly. Nothing in this disclaimer limits any liability that cannot be limited or excluded under English law (including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence).
Site guides & local knowledge
The site guides are a starting point, not a substitute for local knowledge. Conditions, hazards, access and rules change. Before flying a site — and especially a site that is new to you — read the guide and the club-wide rules, seek a briefing from a club coach or experienced pilot on the hill, and make sure you hold the rating and currency the site requires. Never fly a site for the first time without a briefing.
Weather, soaring & the route planner
The weather, soaring and cross-country planning tools draw on third-party forecast models. Forecasts are estimates and can be wrong. The ridge-soaring “is it on?” guide, thermal and soaring estimates, and the route planner are guidance only — they are derived from wind direction and strength and modelled data, do not account for everything that affects a real day, and must never replace your own assessment on the hill. Always make your own judgement; if you are in any doubt, do not fly.
Maps, airspace & NOTAMs
Maps on this site are for reference and situational awareness only and are NOT FOR NAVIGATION. Airspace information and NOTAM data are provided for awareness and may be incomplete or out of date. Fly with a current air chart, and always confirm airspace and any temporary restrictions against the official pre-flight briefing before you fly cross-country.
Live tracking
The members’ live map is a best-effort convenience that relays publicly broadcast position data. It may be inaccurate, delayed or missing, and must not be relied upon for safety, search-and-rescue or to confirm that a pilot is safe. In an emergency, contact the emergency services.
Your responsibility
You are responsible for holding valid BHPA membership and the insurance that comes with it, for flying within your rating and currency, for complying with the law and the rules of each site, and for assessing the conditions and your own fitness to fly on the day. If something looks wrong, it probably is — don’t fly.
